Monetisation, player retention and communities on Discord: Top tips incoming at PGC San Francisco

Building Communities That Retain Players

Discord has long been a hub for gamers to chat and connect, but its potential for game developers goes far beyond simple communication. As Discord's Anthony Tešija will discuss at PGC San Francisco, the platform offers powerful tools for acquiring, retaining, and monetising players through community-driven strategies. The key to success lies in creating a space where players feel valued and engaged, not just between releases, but throughout their entire gaming journey.

Tešija emphasises that retention goes beyond gathering feedback. An active community on Discord gives players a place to meet others, make friends, report bugs, and talk directly with developers. This sense of belonging can bring back lapsed players and keep everyone in the loop about new content. By establishing your community early, even during private alpha testing, you start a vital feedback loop that shapes your game according to player desires, increasing long-term engagement.

Leveraging the Social SDK for Deeper Engagement

The Discord Social SDK, supporting iOS, Android, PC, and console, enables account linking between your game and Discord. This bridge transforms how players interact with your game. According to initial partners, linked players enjoy 16% longer play sessions, open the game on 25% more days, and show a median 34% increase in D28 retention. Account linking allows you to track players in your server, reward them with in-game items for community participation, and create a seamless experience between the game and Discord.

Features like rich presence let friends see what you're playing and invite you directly. Deep link invites allow players to send a one-click invite that launches the game and joins a session, reducing friction and re-engaging lapsed players. These social tools turn Discord into a powerful retention engine by making every interaction an opportunity to play.

Monetisation Through Social Commerce

Discord's new Social Commerce feature lets developers host in-game shops within official servers, enabling players to buy and gift items without leaving the platform. In a pilot with Marvel Rivals, 41% of purchases were gifts, and 25% of gift buyers were lapsed or non-players—they bought for friends. This organic, relationship-driven purchasing unlocks new revenue streams. Players can even buy items for games they don't play, purely to surprise a friend.

The feature is currently in limited access but expanding. Developers can sell skins, season passes, gems, or any in-game item. Gifting happens mid-conversation, and the item appears in the recipient's game next time they play. This social commerce turns Discord into a storefront that leverages existing friendships, driving monetisation in a natural, non-intrusive way.

Acquisition via Quest Campaigns and Rewardable Ads

Discord's ads platform offers Quest campaigns to acquire new players. Video Quests reward users with orbs (redeemable for profile customisation) for watching a video, while Play Quests reward them for playing your game for a set time, like 15 minutes. Instant Play Quests let players try a demo via streaming without downloading, lowering the barrier to entry.

These quests are rewarded ad formats that meet players where they already spend time. By offering tangible rewards, you attract quality users who are already engaged on the platform. Additionally, Discord is developing a new ad type that rewards in-game actions, further aligning acquisition with retention.

Implementing Features Across the Development Cycle

As Staff Developer Advocate Mark Mandal outlined in a GDC talk, the key is knowing what to implement and when. During private alpha, focus on community setup, bots, and companion apps to automate moderation and create in-game-to-Discord feedback loops. Use rich presence to show game activity. In public beta, integrate the Social SDK for account linking and deep link invites to boost retention. At launch, activate Quests for acquisition and Social Commerce for monetisation. Throughout the cycle, claim your game in the Discord Developer Portal to unlock perks and control how it appears.

By timing these integrations, you maximise player value from day one. Starting early builds a loyal community that becomes your best acquisition channel, while later features sustain and monetise that loyalty.

Turning Communities into Revenue Drivers

Discord's evolution from a chat app to a full-fledged platform for game growth is undeniable. The combination of community building, Social SDK features, Quest acquisition, and Social Commerce creates a holistic ecosystem. Developers who embrace these tools see tangible results: longer play sessions, higher retention, and new revenue from gifting. The key is authenticity—players stay because they feel part of something, and they spend because it's social. As Discord continues to innovate, the platform offers a unique advantage for developers willing to go beyond traditional channels.
