WhatsApp Adds Meta AI Chats That Are Built to Be Fully Private

What Is WhatsApp's Incognito Chat and How Does It Work?

Meta has introduced a groundbreaking feature for WhatsApp: Incognito Chat, a private mode for interacting with its Meta AI chatbot. Unlike standard AI chats, Incognito Chat processes your conversations inside a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE)—a hardware-enforced enclave that not even Meta's engineers or infrastructure can access. This means your prompts, messages, and any personal data you share remain invisible to Meta's servers, logging systems, and advertising pipelines.

To start an Incognito session, simply tap the new incognito icon within your one-on-one Meta AI chat. Once active, your conversation is temporary by default: messages disappear as soon as you close the session, close the app, or lock your phone. The AI loses context entirely, ensuring no trace remains. This feature rolls out gradually on WhatsApp and the standalone Meta AI app starting May 13, 2026, so users should keep their apps updated to access it as soon as it arrives in their region.

Why Privacy Matters: The Thinking Behind Incognito Chat

Users increasingly turn to AI chatbots for sensitive queries—financial advice, health information, personal dilemmas, or workplace issues. A 2025 survey found that over 60% of users hesitated to ask personal questions due to privacy concerns. Meta's Incognito Chat directly addresses this by offering a verifiably private space. The company emphasizes that this isn't just about data retention policies; it's about architectural guarantees. With Trusted Execution Environments, Meta cannot read your prompts even if it wanted to, as the code and data within the TEE are isolated from the host operating system.

This move highlights a broader industry shift toward privacy-preserving AI. While standard WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, AI interactions historically required Meta to process prompts on its servers. Incognito Chat closes that gap, giving users the confidence to ask anything without fear of data misuse. As WhatsApp head Will Cathcart noted, privacy isn't optional—it's foundational to how people communicate.

What Incognito Chat Supports (and What It Doesn't)

At launch, Incognito Chat is text-only. You can type questions, get answers, brainstorm ideas, or analyze topics—all within a fully private session. The AI still leverages its full language capabilities, including reasoning, writing assistance, and advice. Safety guardrails remain active, so harmful queries are refused or redirected.

However, there are notable limitations. You cannot upload images, share documents, or use any media—the image-processing pipeline isn't yet integrated with the Private Processing architecture. Additionally, sessions don't save: once closed, your conversation history disappears. Incognito Chat also doesn't support web browsing or tool use by Meta AI. These restrictions may evolve in future updates, but for now, the focus is on delivering a secure, ephemeral text experience.

How Incognito Chat Compares to Standard Meta AI on WhatsApp

Standard Meta AI chats are useful but not private. Messages sent to Meta AI are stored on Meta's servers, used to improve the model, and may be shared across Meta's ecosystem for ad targeting. In contrast, Incognito Chat is designed to be invisible to Meta's systems. The prompt never leaves the TEE, is not logged, and is not used for training or advertising.

Another key difference is the default behavior. Standard chats persist across sessions, allowing you to pick up where you left off. Incognito sessions are temporary and context-free once ended. Also, you must explicitly start an Incognito session; you cannot convert an existing chat into one. For users who want persistent yet private AI, Meta is reportedly working on a feature called "Side Chat" that lets you invoke Meta AI within any WhatsApp chat without other participants seeing the AI's responses—though it will also rely on Private Processing.

Getting Started: What You Need to Know

To use Incognito Chat, ensure you've updated WhatsApp to the latest version. Look for the Meta AI chat (usually a blue circle icon or an AI tab). Tap on it, and you should see an option to start an Incognito session—often via a toggle or a dedicated icon. Once activated, you can type away without worry. The feature is rolling out globally over the coming months, but availability depends on your region and app version. Currently, Meta AI is available in select countries and supports languages like English, Spanish, Hindi, and more.

Note that Incognito Chat requires age verification—users under 13 cannot access it. Additionally, the feature is not yet available in the European Union due to complex data protection regulations, though Meta is reportedly working to comply. If you don't see the option, be patient; check for app updates regularly.

Incognito Chat marks a significant step in making AI interactions truly private. By leveraging advanced confidential computing, Meta is setting a new standard for how major tech companies can offer AI services without compromising user trust. As the feature matures and expands, it could redefine what users expect from their AI assistants—and how they share their most sensitive thoughts.
